Terminal vs. Automator follow-up
Regarding “Terminal vs. Automator”: I never managed to fix the error, but I found an alternate solution. I looped through the files, creating an uncompressed .tar file, and compressed that with gzip. It’s not perfect—the final .tgz ends up on the desktop instead of in the folder where the original files were—but it’s much better than nothing! If anyone wants to know...

iPhoto and Flickr
I used to upload my photos to Flickr using iPhoto’s built in uploader, until I decided I didn’t like how it worked. iPhoto automatically made new sets every time I uploaded, and wouldn’t easily let me choose my own organization. So, I deleted the Flickr sets from iPhoto’s sidebar. Big mistake. Not only did it remove the sets, it deleted all the pictures contained in them...

G
“Be Thou My Vision” by David Gillingham (amazing flute solo). Surprisingly good transition to “Lust for Life” by Girls. Then “Run” by Gnarls Barkley and “Through the Roof ‘n’ Underground” by Gogol Bordello. Yay weird genre combinations. All with G-artists.

Megabutts.
A butt of wine is roughly 126 gallons (US) of wine. Mega is the S.I. prefix for million. So a megabutt is 126 million gallons of wine.

Terminal vs. Automator
Edit: I never figured this out, but I did find an alternate solution, detailed here. I wrote a script that works perfectly when run in a /bin/bash shell by Terminal. But, when I use Automator’s “Do shell script” action (also a /bin/bash shell), it errors out. The script basically runs tar -czf Archive.tgz $filelist, where $filelist is a string of file locations, in quotes,...

FTP
I really wish I could use FTP/SFTP to edit custom Tumblr themes. It would be so much easier than having to copy and paste the entire HTML into the customization page every time I have a small edit. Also, separate CSS files. Please? Pretty, pretty please?

I'm getting too good at this...
Me, about Johnny Weir: Well, despite his outfit, he seems to be doing a very traditional performance.
Olympic announcer: You know in spite of all the controversy, he's really quite a purist.

New theme!
I’ve spent the last few days writing my own brand new Tumblr theme! It’s written in fully valid XHTML 1.1 and CSS 3. However, it will not validate with W3C’s markup or CSS validators. The markup errors come from three sources: Markdown puts ordered lists inside paragraph tags. [Edit: It appears this one is fixable. The ordered list just cannot be the first thing in the...

Acre of Wellesley trees destroyed by NBA owner’s... →
Holy shit this is awful… Bob Campana told the Natural Resources Commission on Tuesday that he hasn’t been able to sleep since he hired landscapers to chop down trees at the Boulder Brook Reservation. “I’m trying to get the knot out of my stomach because of what I’ve done,” he said. Now, where there was once a densely populated forest along a scenic walking path, walkers instead see...

Getting audio from a YouTube video
How to extract the audio file from a YouTube video (either FLV or MP4), without re-encoding it: Install ffmpeg (I suggest using MacPorts on OS X). Download the video (this can be done with Easy YouTube Video Downloader or the “site enhancements” feature of GlimmerBlocker). Run ffmpeg -i [input]. In the output, there should be something like the following: “Stream #0.1: Audio:...
